Zizi is a solar-charged wire-art night light owl by African Robots. 'Zizi' is the Shona word for owl - most of the wire artists we work with are from Zimbabwe - and we hope this night light helps you zzz easy!
It takes a skilled wire artist a day to make Zizi from galvanized steel wire. The wire is brass plated gold (pictured) or galvanised silver (not shown here), marbles are placed in the eyes, and lights and electronics added. When the lights go out, Zizi lights up!
This second-generation Zizi is solar-rechargeable, using upcycled solar panels from the iconic South African Solar Jar which manufacturer SunToy donated to our project. Place it on a windowsill in sunlight to recharge it in the daytime.
This Zizi is one of a limited edition of 40 produced for the Spier Light Art Festival in 2023. It's an artwork, a prototype, and a product. Your purchase will contribute to the further development of the project.
